Updated October 6, 2026Using a virtual private network (VPN) hides your IP address from the sites you visit and routes your web traffic through an encrypted connection. This can help protect your privacy on public Wi-Fi and let you reach your own streaming accounts while you travel, though many services limit VPN use.
But there are so many VPN providers available these days that it can be hard to know where to even start. In this guide, I’ll take you through the VPNs I rated highest and help you decide which one fits your needs, whether you want the best VPN for streaming, the best cheap VPN, or the best VPN for privacy.
Strong encryption (AES-256 or ChaCha20), published no-logs commitments, and a kill switch or firewall mode that blocks traffic if the VPN drops. Many also offer extras like multi-hop routing and ad or malware blocking.
Network size runs from 200+ servers (PrivateVPN) to more than 20,000 (Proton VPN), per each provider. Speed depends on how far you are from the server and how busy it is. Streaming services block many VPN servers, so results vary by service and server.
Works across desktop, mobile and browsers. Many providers also have apps for Android TV, Fire TV or Apple TV, and work on routers. ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Private Internet Access, hide.me and Windscribe each say on their own pages that devices such as Roku, Samsung and LG TVs and game consoles have no native app, and they point to a router or a shared connection instead (hide.me says this for Samsung and LG TVs and for consoles, and we did not find Roku on its site). For the other providers we found no native app listed for those devices on the pages we read.
Free plans or money-back guarantees let you try a service before you commit. Refund windows run from 7 days (Windscribe) to 30 days (most others), and the conditions differ by provider. Most apps are easy to use. The lowest prices usually apply to the first term, so check the renewal price before you pay.

ExpressVPN truly lives up to its name. I found this service’s connection speed to be rather quick. Per ExpressVPN, its app includes a built-in speed test you can use to compare server performance.
Also, ExpressVPN makes it easy to determine which of their servers would be best for your specific situation. The app has a Recommended list of locations.
Who is ExpressVPN best for?
If you’re not too concerned about cost and want a secure, highly customizable VPN app, ExpressVPN is an excellent choice.

Pro costs $22.99 month to month, or $7.49 per month on the 28-month plan (billed $209.72 for the first 28 months, then $199.95 a year). Per ExpressVPN, Basic includes the VPN, Lite Protection (blocks ads, malicious sites and adult sites) and up to 10 simultaneous connections. Advanced adds up to 12 connections, the Advanced Protection filter (which adds tracker blocking), the ExpressKeys password manager and Identity Defender with up to $3M in ID theft insurance. Pro adds up to 14 connections, a dedicated IP, ExpressAI and $5M in insurance. ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for new users only. Proton VPN offers a free plan at $0. However, the free plan is restricted to medium speed (per Proton VPN, the free plan is limited to 1 device and 10 countries), but I didn’t find it to be all that slow. Rather than the old days of dial-up, where a single page might take minutes to load, it’s more like a slight delay. Per Proton VPN, the 10 free countries are randomly selected, so you cannot pick a location.
It’s a matter of personal taste, but I must say that I like the look of Proton VPN more than any of the other providers featured in this guide. It has a high-end feel, without being so flashy that it gets in the way of navigability.
The app’s appearance can be customized in several ways. Android users can disguise the app icon, and mobile users can add a home screen widget.
Who is Proton VPN best for?
With a usable free version and premium plans packed with extra features, Proton VPN is a great fit for just about anyone.

Proton VPN published its fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit by Securitum in 2026, per Proton VPN. Its server list now shows 20,799 servers in 149 countries, and its marketing pages say 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries (checked October 5, 2026). Proton VPN also lists a separate Vega OS app for newer Fire TV sticks, rolling out since late 2025.

In addition to the free plan, VPN Plus lets you connect up to 10 devices at once and adds Plus servers, Secure Core, NetShield, split tunneling and P2P support, per Proton VPN. It costs $9.99 per month on a month-to-month basis. The 12-month plan is $3.99 per month (billed $47.88 for the first 12 months) and the 24-month plan is $2.99 per month (billed $71.76 for the first 24 months). Both renew at $83.88 every 12 months, which works out to $6.99 per month. Every paid plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee, per Proton VPN. Check Proton VPN’s refund terms before you buy. The Proton Unlimited bundle also includes Proton Pass (password manager), Mail, Calendar and Drive. The NordVPN app offers an interactive map, which is a particularly intuitive feature for choosing which server you want to use (a simple list of all the server options is also available).
In my testing, the app included a security score that grades how many protection steps you have turned on. I thought it was a fun way to ensure you get the most out of this service.
In your profile settings, you’ll find options for NordVPN’s more advanced security features, which include post-quantum encryption (NordVPN says it protects your connection against attackers with quantum computers; it is off by default and works only with the NordLynx protocol) and unsafe Wi-Fi detection (NordVPN says its macOS and iOS apps can warn you when you connect to an unsecured network). Advanced users can also tweak tunneling choices if they’re comparing the best VPN protocol for their setup.
Who is NordVPN best for?
NordVPN is a good fit for users who want a secure VPN with a large server network and plenty of extras. Per NordVPN, it is the fastest VPN, based on tests by Artifact Security (June 2026) and West Coast Labs (October 2025), and NordVPN says some of its supporting sources were published through paid partnerships. NordVPN does not guarantee that every streaming service will work with it. Its large server network, Double VPN, SmartPlay and polished apps make it a fit for both beginners and power users.

Per NordVPN, its no-logs policy has been independently audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers (2018 and 2020) and then Deloitte. NordVPN’s own pages disagree on how many reviews there have been and on the latest year, so we do not state one. NordVPN says SmartPlay is built into every app and turned on automatically. NordVPN also says all standard servers now support P2P, since it removed its separate P2P server category from the apps (starting with app versions 9.0.0 on iOS and Android, 8.0.0 on Windows and 10.0.0 on macOS). Per NordVPN, it also publishes quarterly transparency reports.
NordVPN’s pricing:
NordVPN offers three plans: Basic, Complete, and Prime. Basic is $14.99 month to month. It drops to $3.49 per month if you pay for 27 months upfront ($94.23 for the first 27 months), and it includes only the VPN service. Complete is $4.49 per month and Prime is $7.49 per month on the 27-month plans. Both add extras such as antivirus, a password manager and cloud storage. Per NordVPN, Basic has no antivirus, ad blocker, password manager or cloud storage. The low prices are for the first 27 months. Basic then renews at $139.08 per year. The 1-year plan is $5.49 per month ($65.88 for the first 12 months) and also renews at $139.08 per year. Per NordVPN, renewal prices may be higher than the introductory prices and can change. Surfshark’s app has a perfectly streamlined design — even though there were plenty of options available, I found that it was quite easy to browse through everything and configure the settings for my VPN connection.
Surfshark includes Alternative ID in its Starter plan, per Surfshark. It generates a masked email address and personal details you can use to sign up for sites you do not fully trust.
Also, Surfshark’s CleanWeb filter blocks ads and trackers, per Surfshark. Surfshark marks P2P traffic as available in 88 of the 100 countries on its server list. I did not find a written torrenting policy on Surfshark’s site. Surfshark says it does not support port forwarding, and its Terms ban distributing copyright-protected material. Who is Surfshark best for?
This highly secure and easy-to-use VPN service offers ultra-low rates for those willing to commit to a long-term plan. Those rates are introductory. Starter renews at $79.00 per year, per Surfshark. But if you want to pay month-to-month, you can save money by going with a different provider.

Surfshark says Deloitte issued no-logs assurance reports on it in 2023 and 2025. It also offers Dausos, its own VPN protocol, on macOS through the Mac App Store, with other platforms listed as coming soon. A Cure53 cryptography audit summary for Dausos is dated March 30, 2026. Surfshark discontinued its Smart DNS feature on February 2, 2026. Bypasser is Surfshark’s split tunneling feature, which lets chosen apps or sites skip the VPN. It works on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, per Surfshark.

Surfshark’s Starter plan, the plain VPN, is $16.45 per month on a month-to-month basis. The 12-month plan is $3.39 per month ($50.85 for the first 15 months). The 24-month plan is $2.49 per month ($67.23 for the first 27 months). Starter then renews at $79.00 per year, per Surfshark. Prices are in USD before tax. Starter includes Alternative ID, per Surfshark. Antivirus is not included in Starter, per Surfshark. Surfshark offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. The Private Internet Access (PIA) app has a modern, intuitive interface. I like the Quick Connect widget on the main dashboard, which lists up to six servers you have favorited for one-click access. PIA can also be set up on a router, which covers consoles and smart TVs that have no native app, per Private Internet Access.
The main dashboard is customizable. You can rearrange the widgets in the expanded view and bookmark the ones you want on the main screen.
PIA can auto-connect by network type. Per Private Internet Access, its kill switch is on by default in the desktop and iOS apps, which helps keep your traffic from leaking if the VPN drops. On Android, you turn it on in the phone’s Always-on VPN settings.
Another feature worth noting is PIA MACE. PIA MACE is a DNS-level blocker for ads, trackers and malware, per Private Internet Access.
Who is PIA best for?
If your priority is security, then you should be able to find everything you’re looking for with PIA. Also, if you’re planning to make a multi-year commitment anyway, PIA’s rates for long-term plans are some of the best VPN deals.

Private Internet Access now advertises unlimited simultaneous connections on one account. Its terms allow action against abuse, such as resale or non-personal use. Some competitors cap connections at 5 or 10.
PIA’s pricing:
PIA is $11.95 monthly on a month-to-month basis, around the average of the VPNs we list. However, their long-term rates are significantly lower than many comparable plans offered by competitors (for example, the cost of PIA’s 3 Years + 3 Months plan works out to $2.03 per month). The 1 Year plan is $3.99 per month ($47.88 for the first year). The 3 Years + 3 Months plan renews at $79 every 3 years. Per Private Internet Access, the other plans renew at the same price too, $47.88 a year and $11.95 a month. The 30-day money-back guarantee is for new users only. Per Private Internet Access, you must have bought a plan in the previous 30 days and not asked for a refund in the previous 3 months, and it does not cover Apple App Store or Google Play subscriptions.

Hide.me’s interface could use some more polish. It was difficult for me to read the text in a few areas (the text color was too light against the app’s white background), and the alignment of several design elements is just a little off. But, to be fair, I could still configure and establish my connection to one of their servers without too much trouble.
The free plan covers 8 locations per hide.me’s pricing page (its help page says 7), with 1 connection and restricted speeds. Premium unlocks the full network of 2,600+ servers in 92+ locations, including streaming servers in select countries (hide.me lists Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, among others, and does not publish a full count). Per hide.me, Multihop (Double VPN) lets you pick the entry and exit server.
In the apps, you can turn on split tunneling (on the Windows, Android and macOS apps), a kill switch (on by default in the desktop apps, and called Always-on on mobile), StealthGuard (which locks chosen apps or all traffic to the VPN), and SmartGuard, a filter that blocks ads and malware, per hide.me.
Who is Hide.me best for?
Hide.me is worth a look if you want dedicated streaming servers. They are Premium only, and hide.me notes that services such as Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and DAZN block VPN addresses, so access is not guaranteed. Its current help pages walk through BBC iPlayer and RaiPlay.

Hide.me published an Annual Transparency Report for 2025. Its most recent no-logs audit listed on its site is by Securitum, announced in a blog post dated July 4, 2024. It also offers Premium-only dynamic port forwarding (UPnP and NAT-PMP), per hide.me.
Hide.me’s pricing:
As mentioned above, Hide.me offers a free version, though it comes with significant limitations. The Premium plan costs $11.99 per month billed monthly. Longer plans cost less per month: $4.23 per month on the 13-month plan (billed $54.99 every 13 months) and $2.69 per month on the 26-month plan (billed $69.99 every 26 months). Per hide.me’s Pricing Guarantee, your plan renews with the same price and duration. Hide.me offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on paid plans. To qualify, you must email hide.me in writing within the first 30 days, have not claimed a refund before, have not violated hide.me’s terms, and be on your first order (renewals do not qualify). Purchases through Google Play or the App Store follow the store’s refund policy.

Windscribe says it does not throttle speeds, and its blog says 139 of its datacenters support 10 Gbps. Windscribe’s Auto Pilot feature picks a location for you.
Windscribe does not use the name kill switch. Its Firewall does the same job on Windows, Mac and Linux. Per Windscribe, the Firewall blocks all traffic outside the VPN tunnel, and in Always On mode it keeps working after crashes and restarts. On Android and iOS, Windscribe points you to the phone’s own Always On VPN setting.
Another nice feature is R.O.B.E.R.T., Windscribe’s DNS-level blocker for ads and trackers. You can add your own custom rules. The limit is 3 on the free plan, 10 on Build-a-Plan and 1,000 on Pro, per Windscribe.
Who is Windscribe best for?
Windscribe is a good option for teams of five or more, since it sells ScribeForce team accounts at $5 per seat per month with a five-seat minimum, per Windscribe. If you plan to use a VPN on your TV, Windscribe has apps for Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV (tvOS 17.5 or later).

In May 2026, Windscribe published a server upgrade post saying 139 of its datacenters now support 10 Gbps, per Windscribe.
Windscribe’s pricing:
Windscribe has a free plan with 10 GB of data a month once you confirm your email, per Windscribe. Without email confirmation it is 2 GB a month. Windscribe also sells Build-a-Plan, which costs $1 per location per month, per Windscribe. Windscribe says it starts at $3 a month for any two Pro locations plus the $1 Unlimited Bandwidth add-on. Build-a-Plan does not include ephemeral port forwarding, allows P2P only on the locations you pay for, and has 10 custom R.O.B.E.R.T. rules instead of 1,000. For access to all their servers and features, you can pay either $9 per month or $69 per year (which works out to $5.75 per month). ScribeForce team accounts are $5 per month per account, per Windscribe’s knowledge base.

The PrivateVPN app has a somewhat barebones interface, but that won’t matter much if you’re not impressed by a flashy design or interested in a bunch of extra features anyway.
There are several useful security features that can be enabled in the app settings, including a stealth mode that PrivateVPN says helps it connect on networks that block VPNs. I was disappointed, though, that I did not find any double VPN/multi-hop option.

TunnelBear has a fun design — there’s a cartoon map on the app, and whenever you establish a connection, a bear is shown burrowing into the ground at your physical location and then popping up at the location of your proxy server.
However, it should be noted that, at least on the Android version of TunnelBear that I tried out on a Chromebook, the window for this app was awkwardly sized, and there were no alternative display options. The map part of the interface was also somewhat blurry.
In the app settings, you’ll find options such as VigilantBear (the app’s kill switch) and SplitBear (the app’s split tunneling feature). There is also an option to turn on bear sounds. Teams that require a simple solution for multiple users may find it a suitable starter option as a best VPN for remote employees.

I did not find speed claims or speed tests on Mullvad’s site. Mullvad’s FAQ says it does not limit speed, bandwidth or data volume.
Mullvad offers DAITA (Defense against AI-guided Traffic Analysis). Per Mullvad, it is meant to defend against traffic analysis that uses AI. Mullvad’s server list has a filter for DAITA support, and Mullvad’s speed guide says DAITA, multihop and obfuscation slow the connection.
Per Mullvad, its WireGuard tunnels are quantum-resistant on all supported platforms. This has been the default on desktop since January 2025 and on Android since September 2025. Mullvad also offers bridge servers (Shadowsocks) and obfuscation for getting around censorship, per Mullvad.
Who is Mullvad best for?
If privacy is your biggest priority, this is a viable option. I did not find a claim on Mullvad’s site that it unblocks any streaming service, and its own Netflix guide says Netflix frequently blocks VPN services. If you mainly want to stream, pick a provider that advertises streaming support.

In March 2026, Mullvad posted an audit of GotaTun, its WireGuard implementation, by Assured. In June 2026, it posted a second Android app security assessment by Leviathan. Its latest infrastructure audit, of one OpenVPN and one WireGuard server, was done by Cure53 in June 2024, and Mullvad says it applied, verified and deployed all changes, though it accepted the risk on one informational finding.
Mullvad’s pricing:
Per Mullvad, its price has not changed since it launched in 2009. It costs €5 per month (about $5.63 at Mullvad’s own conversion on October 6, 2026, VAT included) whether you pay for 1 month, 1 year or 1 decade. Mullvad runs no sales and gives no discount for longer plans, but says it takes 10% off when you pay with an accepted cryptocurrency. You top up time instead of subscribing, so there is no renewal price. Other providers offer better deals in exchange for a long-term commitment. Mullvad has a 14-day money-back guarantee. There’s only so much you can learn about VPN providers from the information on their websites. In addition to reviewing the pricing and features, I also signed up for and tested each of the VPN services featured in this guide to get hands-on experience with their user interfaces. Then, I was able to rate each provider based on the six factors that are most important for a VPN:

Many providers also offer additional security features, such as malware filters and the ability to automatically connect to your VPN as soon as your device starts up.
I looked for providers that offer a large number of VPN servers covering a wide geographical area. This ensures that most people will benefit from good performance — the closer a server is to you, the faster the connection speed will be. That’s another reason why I wanted to test out all of these services myself, as this allowed me to confirm that the performance was at least adequate for general web browsing.
Also, having servers in more countries gives you more choices when you travel and want to use your home services.
Yet another reason why I wanted to test out these providers myself is that this allowed me to get a feel for their app interfaces firsthand and truly evaluate the user experience (UX). Many VPN apps are sleek and user-friendly, while others are clunky and outdated.
All of the providers featured in this guide offer either a free version of their service or a money-back guarantee. That way, you can try the app yourself and confirm that it works. Most paid plans are billed upfront for the first term, so read the refund conditions before you pay. Most low prices apply to the first term only, so check the renewal price before you buy.

I looked for VPNs that support a broad range of devices and operating systems. At a minimum, a VPN should offer desktop apps for Windows and macOS and mobile apps for Android and iOS. Many providers also offer support for more niche platforms.
Even if you only need a VPN for yourself, you may want to use it on several devices — your computer, phone, TV, etc. And if you want to cover a family or small team, check each provider’s terms first, because some prohibit account sharing (Windscribe does, for example). I made sure every provider’s paid plan allows at least five devices at once, and several advertise unlimited devices with conditions (Windscribe: unlimited devices for personal use; account sharing is not allowed and extreme use can lead to a ban, per Windscribe).
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates a secure, encrypted connection between your device and the internet. It routes your traffic through a remote server, masking your IP address and making your online activity harder to track. This helps protect you from snooping on public Wi-Fi and from your internet service provider (ISP) seeing which sites you visit. It can also let you reach your own streaming accounts while you travel, though many services limit VPN use. VPNs are especially valuable when using public Wi-Fi or browsing sensitive information online. For the best vpn for public wifi, NordVPN is a strong pick because it offers a kill switch, and its macOS and iOS apps can warn you about unsecured networks. Yes, VPNs are legal in most countries, including the United States, Canada, the UK, and the majority of the EU. However, some countries, like China, Russia, and Iran, heavily regulate or ban their use. While using a VPN is typically legal, using one to engage in illegal activities (e.g., piracy or black hat hacking) is not. Always check the laws in your region to ensure compliance. If you’re traveling or working abroad, check local laws first. Proton VPN says its Stealth protocol is built for networks that block VPNs, and NordVPN lists obfuscated servers among its specialty servers.
Using a VPN usually reduces your internet speed a little because of encryption and rerouting through a remote server. Surfshark says speeds may drop by up to 20 to 30 percent. Modern protocols like WireGuard or Lightway help. A VPN can also help if your ISP throttles certain traffic. Your results depend on the provider, the server you pick and how far away it is.

Free VPNs often come with limits like slower speeds, data caps, fewer server options and fewer features. The free plans here differ. Per Proton VPN, its free plan has unlimited bandwidth but allows one device, 10 countries and medium speed. Windscribe gives 10 GB a month with a confirmed email, and 2 GB without. hide.me’s own pages conflict on its free data allowance (10 GB a month in one place, unlimited in others). TunnelBear gives 2 GB. Per Windscribe, P2P is off on its free servers, and per hide.me its streaming servers are Premium only. If you’re serious about privacy and security, investing in a reputable paid VPN is highly recommended. However, if you want a free VPN, Proton VPN’s free plan is worth a look.
